What a watermark is for

A watermark is a mark composited onto an image — text or a logo, usually semi-transparent, placed in a corner or tiled across the frame. Technically it is an alpha blend: the mark's pixels are mixed with the underlying image at whatever opacity you choose, permanently altering the exported file.

It is a deterrent and an attribution mark rather than a security measure. A corner watermark is easy to crop out; a large tiled one is hard to remove but interferes with viewing the image. Most photographers settle in the middle: a legible mark placed over part of the subject, at low opacity, so removing it would damage the picture. The point is not to make theft impossible but to make casual reuse traceable and inconvenient.

Why we built this tool

Photographers watermark portfolio images and client proofs, designers mark unapproved drafts, and businesses stamp product photos before they end up on a competitor's listing.

Proofs and unreleased work are the definition of material you should not upload to an unknown service — you would be handing over the clean, unwatermarked original, which is precisely the thing you are trying to protect. Our tool composites the watermark on a canvas in your browser, so the original stays on your device and only you ever hold the unmarked version. There is no batch limit, no account, and no service watermark added alongside yours, which is how many free tools pay for themselves.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Place the mark over part of the subject; a corner watermark takes seconds to crop away.
  • Keep opacity around 30 to 50 per cent so the mark reads without ruining the image.
  • Use a light mark on dark images and a dark one on light images, or add a subtle outline for both.
  • Watermark exported copies only, and archive the clean original separately.

Quick start: using Add Watermark to Image

  1. Load the image you want to mark.
  2. Add your watermark text or upload a logo image.
  3. Set the position, size, and opacity — 30 to 50 per cent is usually visible without dominating.
  4. Preview it over the busiest part of the image to check legibility.
  5. Apply and download, keeping the unwatermarked original safe.

For documents rather than pictures, Add Watermark to PDF does the same job page by page.
