Cropping: composition and aspect ratio
Cropping discards everything outside a rectangle you choose. Unlike resizing, it does not resample anything — the pixels you keep are the original pixels, untouched — so cropping never softens an image. It only makes it smaller in both dimensions and, usually, better composed.
Aspect ratio is the reason most crops happen. A square for a profile picture, 16:9 for a video thumbnail or slide, 4:5 for an Instagram portrait, 1.91:1 for a link preview card. Each platform crops automatically if you do not, and its automatic choice is frequently wrong — heads cut off, text lost at the edges. Cropping deliberately to the ratio you need is the only way to control what survives.
Why we built this tool
The everyday reasons are simple: straightening up a composition, cutting a distracting background, fitting a platform's required shape, or removing something at the edge of a photo you would rather not publish.

Tips and common mistakes
- Crop to the platform's ratio yourself; automatic cropping cuts heads off with remarkable consistency.
- Check the output dimensions after cropping — a tight crop can leave too few pixels for its destination.
- Leave margin around a subject that may be cropped again downstream, such as a profile picture shown as a circle.
- Cropping is lossless, so crop before compressing to avoid re-encoding twice.
