Gain, normalisation, and clipping

Raising volume means applying gain — multiplying every sample by a factor. The hard ceiling is 0 dBFS, the maximum a digital sample can represent. Push past it and the peaks are simply cut flat, which is clipping, and it sounds like harsh distortion that cannot be undone.

Normalisation avoids this by measuring first. Peak normalisation finds the loudest sample and scales the whole file so that peak sits just below the ceiling, raising level with no distortion at all. Loudness normalisation goes further, measuring perceived loudness in LUFS — the standard broadcasters and streaming platforms use — because a track can have a low peak and still sound loud, or the reverse. Compression is the third option, reducing the gap between quiet and loud passages before applying gain, which is how a quiet voice recording is made consistently audible.

Why we built this tool

The common cases are a recording made too far from the microphone, a video whose dialogue is too quiet, a voice note that is inaudible on a phone speaker, and a set of clips recorded at inconsistent levels.

Those recordings are private — meetings, interviews, family videos, voice messages. Uploading them to a volume-boosting site for what is fundamentally a multiplication is an unnecessary transfer. Ours processes the samples in your browser through the Web Audio API and re-encodes locally, so the file stays with you. There is no length limit and no watermark, and you can run as many files as you like without hitting a free-tier cap.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Use normalisation rather than raw gain wherever possible — it raises level without clipping.
  • Clipping is permanent; there is no recovering a squared-off waveform.
  • Compression before gain is how a quiet, uneven voice recording is made consistently audible.
  • Check the result on the device it will actually be played on, not just on headphones.

Quick start: using Volume Booster

  1. Load the audio that is too quiet.
  2. Use normalisation rather than raw gain where possible — it will not clip.
  3. If you apply gain manually, raise it in small steps and watch the peak meter.
  4. Listen for harshness on the loudest passages, which signals clipping.
  5. Export the result and check it on the device where it will actually be played.
