What a PDF watermark actually is
A watermark is content drawn onto the page alongside everything already there — usually text such as CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT, rotated diagonally, rendered semi-transparent, and repeated across every page. In PDF terms it is added to the page's content stream with a transparency setting, which is why the document underneath stays fully readable through it.
Because it becomes part of the page content rather than an annotation layer, it survives printing, flattening, and conversion to images. It is a deterrent and a provenance mark, not a security control: anyone determined enough can rasterise pages and edit it out. If you need the document to be genuinely unreadable without authorisation, encryption is the right tool, and watermarking is what you add on top.
Why we built this tool
The usual reasons are professional: marking a proposal as a draft so nobody quotes it as final, labelling internal copies, stamping a client's name across a document you are sending for review, or asserting authorship on work you are sharing before it is signed off.
Every one of those documents is unpublished by definition, which makes uploading it to a watermarking service a strange thing to do — you would be handing out the very file you are trying to control. Our tool draws the watermark in your browser using a WebAssembly PDF library, writes the new content streams locally, and hands the stamped file straight back. Your unstamped original never leaves the device, and no watermark of ours is added to the output alongside yours.
Tips and common mistakes
- Light grey at around 30 per cent opacity is visible without making the text underneath hard to read.
- A diagonal watermark across the middle is harder to crop out than one tucked in a corner.
- Keep the wording short — DRAFT or a client name reads at a glance, a full sentence does not.
- Watermark a copy, never your only original, since the mark is drawn permanently into the page content.
