What is a favicon?

A favicon is the small icon a browser shows in the tab, the bookmark list, the history, and the address bar. It began as a single 16-pixel favicon.ico file in the root of a site and has grown considerably since: modern sites need several sizes, because the same icon appears in a tab, on a phone home screen when someone saves the site, in a pinned tile, and in search results.

The practical set is a 16 and 32 pixel icon for browser tabs, a 180-pixel Apple touch icon for iOS home screens, 192 and 512 pixel PNGs for Android and web app manifests, and an ICO file for older browsers. Designing for 16 pixels is the real constraint: at that size, detail disappears entirely, so a full logo rarely survives. A single letter, a simple mark, or a strong silhouette with high contrast is what actually reads.

Why we built this tool

Every site needs one. Without it, browsers show a blank page icon, which looks unfinished, and a tab full of open pages becomes hard to navigate — users find your tab by its icon far more often than by its title.

The source image is usually an unreleased logo, which is reason enough not to upload it to a generator that keeps a copy. Ours renders every size on a canvas in your browser, so the logo stays on your device, no account is required, and the icons are produced instantly with no upload wait. Nothing about a resizing job needs a server, and we did not build one.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Design for 16 pixels first; if the mark is unreadable at that size, simplify it rather than shrinking it.
  • Provide 16, 32, 180, 192, and 512 pixel versions to cover browsers, iOS, and Android.
  • High contrast survives small sizes; fine gradients and thin strokes do not.
  • Browsers cache favicons aggressively, so hard-refresh or use a private window when testing a change.

Quick start: using Favicon Generator

  1. Load a square source image, ideally 512 pixels or larger.
  2. Check the small-size previews first — if the 16-pixel version is unreadable, simplify the artwork.
  3. Generate the full set of icon sizes.
  4. Download them and place them in your site's root directory.
  5. Add the corresponding link tags to your page head, then hard-refresh to clear the cached icon.

Prepare the artwork first with Crop Image for a square frame and Remove Background for transparency.
