Silence detection works on amplitude. The tool scans the waveform for stretches where the signal stays below a threshold for longer than a minimum duration, and removes or shortens them. Both parameters matter: a threshold set too high starts eating quiet speech, while a minimum duration set too low chops the natural pauses between words and makes the result sound frantic.
Real recordings are never truly silent either. Room tone — the low hiss of air conditioning, computer fans, and the space itself — sits under everything, so the threshold has to be set relative to that noise floor rather than to absolute zero. Removing silence completely also sounds unnatural, which is why the better approach is usually to shorten long gaps rather than delete them outright.
Why we built this tool
Podcast editors cut dead air, false starts, and the pauses between takes. Lecture recordings and recorded meetings are full of silence that adds nothing. Voice notes often begin and end with several seconds of fumbling.
All of that material is private, and it is exactly the kind of long file that server-based editors either cap or charge for. Tips and common mistakes
- Set the threshold just above the room's noise floor rather than at absolute zero.
- Shorten long pauses rather than deleting them; speech with no gaps sounds frantic.
- Check the result for clipped word beginnings, the classic sign of too high a threshold.
- Run it before compressing or converting, not after.
